Alnwick Gardens

The Duchess of Northumberland’s 6000 sq ft tree house – complete with walkways, rope bridges, restaurant and log fire is the centrepiece of Alnwick Gardens, which is credited under the duchess’s stewardship with having drawn thousands of visitors to the north of England since it was opened in 2005.

I feel it makes a wonderful day out and you can buy a joint ticket for Alnwick Castle as well (where parts of Harry Potter were filmed). This is the second largest inhabited castle in England and often referred to as the “Windsor of the North” – only 30 miles south from Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Tip: go early to avoid queues, book ahead to be sure of a table in the treehouse.

Alnwick also has a fantastic second hand bookshop called Barter Books, one of the largest second hand bookshops in Britain.
